King James Bible
In short, what we are talking about is the Authorized King James Version, commonly known as the King James Version, King James Bible or KJV. It is an English translation of the Christian Bible by the Church of England. It is the third offical translation of the bible. The first was the Great Bible commissioned by the Church of England in the reign of King Henry VIII, and the second was the Bishop's Bible of 1568. King James VI of Scotland and I of England decided, in accordance with a bunch of important folks at the Hampton Court Conference, that a new translation was needed becasue of perceived problems of the earlier translations as detected by the Puritans, a faction within the Church of England. Thus King James Bible translation was begun in 1604 and finsihed in 1611. And yes, it took many years, but come on, it is a really thick book.
King James (19 June 1566 – 27 March 1625) was King of Scots as James VI from 24 July 1567 and King of England and Ireland as James I from the union of the English and Scottish crowns on 24 March 1603 until his death. James was the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. At 57 years and 246 days, James reign in Scotland was longer than any of his predecessors. Apparently King James was very much opposed to witches and was personally involved in interrogations and torture of some poor sods believed to be witches. Well, to his defense, the enlightenment had not begun yet...
Crime does not pay
Our latest piece of art is a compilation of Dostojevski's Crime and Punishment. Fjodor Mikhaylovich Dostojevski, which in Russian looks something like this: Фёдор Миха́йлович Достое́вский is a Russian 19th century author. He is best known for his extremely popular novels Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov.
In a nutshell: Dostoyevsky's literary works explore human psychology in the troubled political, social and spiritual context of 19th-century Russian society. He is considered one of the greatest and most prominent psychologists in world literature. Most critics consider Dostoyevsky to be one of Europe's major novelists, while others, like Vladimir Nabokov, maintain that from a point of view of enduring art and individual genius, he is a rather mediocre writer who produced wastelands of literary platitudes.
Best, is of course, to judge for yourself. We recommend that you start with Crime and Punishment. yes, it is a tomb of a book, but it is truly magnificent. Our piece f art is from just Crime and Punishment. the main protagonist is Raskolnikov, a young, embittered faield student who embarks on an il fated journey of discovery, crime and ultimately punishment.
